SKIN HEALTH

It's more than just skin deep. And it's one of my favourites.

I love skin. It's so damn tricky to treat, because skin healing can be oh so slow. It takes 28 days for skin cell turnover, so a realistic time frame for skin healing can be around 3-6 months. But when you do figure out the reasons behind your skin issue and start an individualised treatment protocol skin improvement can also be quite rapid! The tricky thing about skin is that the reasons behind the problem are individual for each person.

That's where I come in, and it's what I love. I'm like a skin detective and love getting to the root causes of you skin troubles.

Because I've been there too.

I've had terrible skin issues (yes both eczema and acne, thank you universe) in the past and I think that this experience is key to really understanding skin and treating it successfully. I've spent so many hours, years and brain time firstly studying to get a degree in health science (Naturopathy and Nutrition), and then conducting my own obsessive research to fix my own skin issues. So when I have women sit in front of me in my clinic room and tell me about their skin issues, I get it.  I really do. And I can help. This is why I do what I do :)

If you suffer from skin issues like eczema and acne, there's something going on inside  your body that needs to be corrected and brought back into balance.

The skin is our largest organ. It is heavily involved in detoxification and relies on the other organs of detoxification to also function correctly. These are the liver, bowels, kidneys and lungs. If you have skin issues, chances are your other detoxification pathways need some support to take the burden off of your skin.

Of course, what we put on our skin is also important, so making sure you avoid harsh, toxic chemicals found in personal care products is also important.

ACNE

Acne is caused by a combination of hormonal imbalances, poor gut health and impaired liver detoxification.

There are a number of triggers for acne and these include:

- PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome)

- Oestrogen Excess and Poor Liver Detoxification

- Post-Pill Acne (when stopping the oral contraceptive pill)

- Food Intolerances

- Histamine Intolerance

- Diet, Nutrient Deficiencies and Insulin Resistance (See more here)

- Poor gut health and an imbalanced gut microbiome (your gut bacteria)

In my clinic, hormone testing is a must when it comes to acne. Different hormone imbalances require different treatment. For example, elevated androgens requires different treatment to oestrogen dominance. Both can cause acne but correcting them requires different herbs, supplements and dietary changes.

ECZEMA

Eczema is an allergic condition caused by poor gut health and food intolerances, leading to histamine intolerance.

Seems strange? Allergy is caused by an overactive immune response, and 80% of your immune system lies along your digestive tract. To top it off, your microbiome (your gut bacteria) talk directly with your immune system to either keep it calm (when you've got a balanced microbiome), or to fire it up and make it overreact (when you have an imbalanced microbiome and inflammatory bacteria present in high numbers).

To heal your eczema you have to correct your gut health. Find out more in my blog post on histamine intolerance
